Question: What is the prevalence of violence towards adults with disabilities and is the risk higher than that in non-disabled adults?
Outcomes: Prevalence of violence (physical, sexual or intimate partner violence) against adults with disabilities; risk of violence compared with non-disabled people.
Design: Systematic review and meta-analysis.
Data sources: Medline, PsycINFO, CINAHL, International Bibliography of the Social Sciences, ASSIA, ERIC, Sociological Abstracts, Cochrane Library, Embase, National Criminal Justice Reference System Abstracts Database, Social Care Online and the Social Sciences Citation Index were searched between 1 January 1990 and 17 August 2010. The author's hand searched web-based sources, reference lists of included journals and additional journals not indexed in the electronic sources.
Study selection and analysis: Studies that reported prevalence estimates of violence against adults with disabilities or the comparative risk of violence in disabled adults compared to that in non-disabled adults (mainly aged ≥ 18 years) were included.
