What is already known on this topic

Standardised mindfulness-based interventions (MBIs) offer a way of being and perceiving that facilitates personal insight and mental resilience in daily life. Scientific evidence indicates that MBIs attenuate a spectrum of stress-related mental and physical health ailments.1

Methods of the study

Johnson and colleagues report on an adapted MBI, mindfulness-based mind fitness training (MMFT), which uses mindfulness practices—based on attentional and sensorimotor activities—to increase interoceptive awareness, stress resilience, self-regulation and calculated decision-making. 281 marines undergoing predeployment training were randomly selected from a military base in Southern California and were then non-randomly assigned to MMFT or military training as usual.
